Bare exterior concrete drinks water, and at night that water freezes and lifts the surface off in thin flakes. That is scaling, and it starts where water sits and where the ice melt gets spread each winter. Magnesium chloride from the highways rides home on tires and soaks deep into the open pores of the slab. From the inside it breaks the surface apart, and hail and wide temperature swings do the rest.
Around a pool the complaints are simple: the deck is slick when it is wet. A dark, smooth surface also gets too hot for bare feet in the summer sun. Paint and plain epoxy make both worse, because they gloss up outdoors and amber in the altitude sun. Our exterior finishes go the other way, with grit in the top coat and lighter colors that stay cooler. Texture underfoot matters more than shine out here.
We work three routes outdoors, and the slab in front of us decides which one. Stain plus an acrylic top coat keeps the texture you have and adds color, with grit in the last coat. The pool deck in the photos went that way. It was cracked and faded to a pale tan, so we cleaned it, filled the cracks and stained it a terracotta red-brown. An acrylic top coat with grit went on last.
Route two is a coating system in flake or solid color, sealed with a UV-stable polyaspartic top coat. It fits patios and porches, and it is the way to match a new garage floor. Route three is a clear or tinted sealer on its own, for a sound slab that only needs protection. Where the surface is badly pitted, a resurfacing overlay goes down first and the finish goes on top of it.
Outdoor pool season here is short, so deck work gets done before the pool opens or after it closes. That keeps the deck clear and dry while the stain and the top coat go down. Patios, porches and walkways run spring through fall, on dry days that stay above the product's minimum temperature. Rain and wet snow push a start date, and we would rather move a day than coat a damp slab.
